Split King Sheets

Who Needs Split King Sheets?

WSplit King Sheetshat is a split king sheet set? Well, if you have just become the proud owner of a brand new adjustable split king bed like my new TempurPedic, you definitely need some. We had our new bed delivered and then all I had to put on it were our old queen sized sheets, and they were not going to work.

An adjustable split king bed is identical in size to two twin extra long (Twin XL) beds pushed next to each other. It’s the same size as a regular king sized bed, but the head and foot can be raised independently on each side. The bottom sheet has to be separate on each side. This picture shows how tension is created between the two sides at the bottom middle when the right side is raised.

This isn’t a great picture, but it shows you the bottom of the bed at the junction of the two Twin XL beds that comprise the split king. You can see the looped bar that keeps the mattress in place when the platform raises or lowers the foot of the bed.

For split king bed, there are three choices for a neatly fitting sheet set:

  •  2 sets of TwinXL sheets: The extra top sheet gets tucked into the middle – 2 TwinXL bottom sheets, 2 TwinXL top sheets and 2 pillow cases
  • 1 split king sheet set – 2 TwinXL bottom sheets, 1 king top sheet and 2 pillow cases
  • 1 king sheet set – 1 king fitted bottom, 1 king top sheet, 2 pillow cases (with the sad trade off of not using the adjustable features of the bed)

How to Make an Adjustable King Bed with Twin XL Sheets

Split King Sheets - making the bed

The top sheet is two separate sheets tucked between the two in the middle – as you see I’ve done with mine in the picture. I’m also considering sewing the two Twin XL top sheets together down the middle. My picture is not pressed and polished…it’s just a snapshot of some clean, inexpensive sheets on my new adjustable dual king bed.

The top sheets don’t stay tucked in and have to be redone every morning. It’s not easy to do with the beds next to each other. I usually just lean across each side and do my best in that position. A perfect job would require separating the beds.

Where To Get Twin XL Sheet Sets for a Split King Bed

The best time to shop for cheap ($13 to $20 per set) Twin XL sheet sets is during August when stores are targeting back to school. Most college dormitories use Twin XL mattresses and that’s what kids going off to college are looking for. Stores like Target, Kmart and Walmart are likely to have displays for back to school featuring Twin XL sheet sets and they might not have these in the store during the rest of the year. There will be in-store sales on these in August as well.

Regular twin sheets are 5 inches shorter than Twin XL; so you can’t substitute regular twin bottom sheets for the split king. Also, the sheets being sold to college kids for the dorm are often not of the best quality. In the pictures of my sheets above, I feature a cotton/poly blend that I purchased on sale at Target. They were washed twice before putting on the bed and there was lot of dye coming out of them. There was a lot of dye residue in the washer and dryer; so they probably aren’t finished clearing and they feel kind of stiff and scratchy. Before getting these, I tried some cotton/poly tee shirt knit sheets from Target. Those didn’t have a dye problem, but after two uses, the bottom sheets have begun to get a pilled surface. It’s possible that knit sheets made of 100% long staple cotton knit might not have this early pill problem. I think they are not going to last very long. On order are 2 sets of expensive 100% cotton Twin XL sheets that were on clearance with hopes that they will be what I’m looking for.

Knit sheets are clingy and warmer than cotton percale sheets. I didn’t dislike them, but miss that cool fresh feeling the percale sheets have. Cotton/poly sheets are supposed to be wrinkle free, but, for me, they wrinkle about the same as all cotton sheets do. I’m hoping the 300 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets I’ve ordered will be thicker and smoother. One other type of sheets that I haven’t tried yet, are microfiber. Having felt some of this fabric in the stores, I’m not sure they will last longer than the knit fabric.

From my experience, buying cheap at the back to school sales might not catch the most enduring bargains. These purchases were both under $15 per set for Twin XL sheets. The best plan on a budget might be to search for clearance and sale deals on high thread count cotton sheet sets. Here are some I am currently salivating over:

Twin XL sheets

My new cotton Twin XL sheet sets came by UPS today and they do look beautiful. They’re in the washing machine as I write this and I can’t wait to try them out. I always wash new sheets before putting them on the bed.

These sets came from NoMoreRack online. I have purchased different things 3 times from this company and so far they have been very reliable and one of the payments they accept is PayPal, which I like.

I checked and they still had some of the ones I bought, but there’s a count down timer on the “deal” and it only had 18 hours left. Maybe they will list it again. Be careful, if you want cotton, not to be tricked by the ads for microfiber. These sets were made in India (I prefer over China), and I paid $33 a set (retail listed as $89.99). I have bought rechargeable batteries and boots from NoMoreRack. They have many different kinds of things. Check them out by clicking the banner below. This is not an affiliate banner. They do pay people to refer others to the site, but their links expire very quickly and are not practical for a page such as this.

Where to Find Split King Sheet Sets

Yes, you can buy a set that includes the two Twin XL fitted bottom sheets and the King flat sheet with matching pillow cases. I have yet to find them in the department store though; so took my search to Amazon. The prices for these quality sets is about the same as for 2 Twin XL sets together, but the quality and design is the same or better. Also, prices change from day to day; so click through to find today’s price for these beautiful split king sheet sets. I continue to wonder, though, if the torque at the bottom when one side is raised will untuck, strain or tear the top sheet.

Best Fitted Sheets With Deep Pockets

Many new mattresses now have a pillow top which makes them very tall… up to 25 inches. It’s so frustrating when a fitted sheet has shallow pockets that either keep slipping off the mattress corner or are so tight that they are hard to put on the bed. Split king adjustable beds have a tall foam layered mattress and can include a pillow top. Bottom sheets have to be able to move with the mattress and stay in place; so, while shopping for your adjustable bed sheets, keep in mind, especially if your king adjustable bed has a pillow top, that deep pockets are important. Here are some deep fitted sheets with great reviews:

  1. Have you tried sewing two xl twin top sheets together yet? If so what’s your opinion on doing that?

    Thanks,
    Lori

    1. Hey, Lori, Thanks so much for visiting my page. Yes, the thought did occur to me to sew two twin sheets together. Keep in mind that there is extra width for the drop on each side in the middle. You might want to keep it, or adjust by cutting some off. I’d recommend using a flat felled seam. The only problem might arise is shear force if the foot of one side is raised on an adjustable bed.
