Best Indoor Fans

best indoor fans
best indoor fansEven people with central air can benefit from using an indoor fan. Every room has it’s own best type or style. Below explore your best choices from the many fans available to buy today. There’s a specialized appliance to get your air moving for more comfortable living in your home or office. Keep in mind that just moving the air can help people feel cooler. This coolness results from either evaporating moisture from the skin or by moving air of different temperatures to other places in the house. These fans do not actually change the temperature of the air in a room, but they can push air from a hot ceiling to a cooler floor; or the other way around.

Since the electric fan was invented in 1886, most homes have had the comfort afforded by at least one electric fan. The first unit was a very simple two bladed appliance with a simple cage. Engineers have been trying to improve on the original design ever since. Today there are many different styles and shapes to choose from – including fans with no obvious blades at all.

If you’re trying to choose for your use, please consider these variables:

  • small or large diameter
  • portable or fixed installation
  • doorway, floor, shelf/desk, pole or ceiling
  • safe around children or pets
  • noise level (some people like the white noise of a fan for sleeping)
  • remote control

This lens will cover table, ceiling, floor, doorway, indoor/outdoor, retro, window and wall fans. That’s a lot of types, and this page will showcase the best to help you pick one.

First the Unexpected Little Doorway Fan

If you heat by wood stove or fireplace, it’s recommended to use a doorway fan to help distribute the warm air throughout the house. These are very small units mounted near the top of a doorway. Some of them are wedge shaped and fit snugly into the corner of the door frame opening. This type of indoor fan is also handy to redistribute the air when your central heat is not evenly distributed from room to room.

You must by now have seen the new Dyson bladeless fans and there are other cylinder blade-less tower fans. Note that the standard fans come with 3, 4 and 5 blades and there’s often a choice of white, silver or black colors. Here’s a well recommended selection of the newest styles in pedestal fans.

The Welcoming Window Fans

Inexpensive whole house air conditioning?

They are most helpful in summer placed tightly into an open window to blow hot air out of the house during the day or to suck cool air inside at night. Paired with an open window on the opposite side of the house and when closely fit into the window, they work very effectively. Some have one fan and others are pairs of fans in the same box and some have temperature sensitive controls that reverse the fan automatically. Here are some well recommended window fans.

Generally these are fans that are too large to sit on a table, but not raised high on a stand. Technically any table fan could be used on the floor, but floor fans are usually at least 16 to 20 inches in diameter. The box fan style just sits in one position, while those mounted on a frame can be swiveled to blow upward into a room. Some have variable speed adjustment. Many people use either a floor fan or a personal sized fan to produce white noise to assist sleeping. Some of these are perfect for that use. This is the floor fan that I love to use year round as it mixes the air either from heat and AC. If our power goes out, I can run this fan off our generator; so we don’t miss the air conditioner as much.

If you have an section of your home where you always seem to need air circulation and the fan is always in the way, consider the wall mount fan. The doorway mount fans above are one option, but most wall mount fans are larger diameter than those and move more air. A few of the floor fans are adaptable to wall mount, but keep an eye on the weight as some are kind of heavy for putting on the wall.

A wall mount fan is a wise choice for a home with pets or small children.

The Whole House Fan

I remember when I was a little girl visiting my uncle’s house in South Carolina. He had a fan fit into a square hole in the upstairs ceiling that would suck the air from the open windows up and out through the attic vents. It was such a delicious cooling breeze that fan would pull through both the downstairs and upstairs windows.

Retro or Deco Fans – Beauty is in the Air

These are fully functional fans that look like they came from a museum collection. They contribute to the total atmosphere of a room’s decor and can lend a flavor of times past, even though they are not antique or “old”. They feature antique copper and oil rubbed bronze and fine wood finishes. These fans are for those who desire and can afford beauty with function; or even someone who likes to decorate with a bit of steampunk style.

  1. This is great value for a slim, sleek tower fan that works as well and silently as some we tried at three times the price. It creates a wide flow of air thanks to the automatic oscillation, and there are three speed settings and a two hour timer so you can cool the room before you return home. Not great for huge areas though.
